Albite dissolution rates in brines: Implications for late-stage weathering on Mars

چکیده
Plagioclase minerals have been detected over large portions of the Mars surface. Average plagioclase mineral compositions are approximately An60 for dust free areas on Mars; however, these likely reflect a mixture more and less sodic at also observed in association with chloride sulfate salts surface meteorites. Understanding dissolution brines provides insight into post-Noachian weathering Mars. Batch reactor experiments were conducted 298 K to compare albite rates water (18 MΩ cm−1ultrapure (UPW) adjusted pH 2 H2SO4; activity (ɑH2O) = 1.0), 2.7 mol kg−1 MgSO4 (aH2O 0.92), 1.24 MgCl2 2.9 0.75), 5.8 0.33) determine how changing solution chemistry influence dissolution. Aqueous Si-based indicate decreased from −8.80 ± 0.02 −9.49 0.40 log m−2 s−1 as 1 0.33. Na-based followed same trend, decreasing −8.58 0.04 UPW −9.45 0.15 MgCl2. Anion did not appear effect high salinity acid pH. Estimated mm grain lifetimes increase ~60–100 ~587 years decreases, suggesting that was limited duration and/or extent.

The Fe-rich smectite nontronite M1.05[Si6.98Al1.02][Al0.29Fe3.68Mg0.04]O20(OH)4 has been detected using orbital data at multiple locations in ancient terrains on Mars, including Mawrth Vallis, Nilli Fossae, north of the Syrtis Major volcanic plateau, Terra Meridiani, and the landing site of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), Gale Crater. Given the antiquity of these sites (>3.0 Ga), it is likel...
متن کاملSerpentinite Weathering and Implications for Mars
Introduction: In the search for life on Mars nearsurface soil environments may be important habitats for life accessible to future missions. Serpentinite rocks have been documented on Mars [1], as well as other clay minerals including smectite and kaolinites [2, 3]. Previous studies of soils formed on serpentinites on Earth have documented the formation of extensive clays, including smectite [4...

Experimental studies of Mars-analog brines
Evaporite deposits may represent significant sinks of mobile cations (e.g., those of Ca, N, Mg, and Fe) and anions (e.g., those of C, N, S, and Cl) among the materials composing the Martian surface and upper crust. Carbon and nitrogen are especially interesting because of their role as atmospheric gases which can become incorporated into crustal rocks. However, the nature of evaporite precursor...
